Breast reconstruction

Breast reconstruction

Nowadays, breast reconstruction is an indispensable step in the treatment of breast cancer, which restores bodily integrity and the sense of femininity in patients who have undergone partial or total excision of breast tissue.

The intervention is indicated mainly in women who have undergone a mastectomy as part of breast cancer treatment. Reconstruction is a personal choice, and the plastic surgeon will discuss and help the patient make an informed decision.

Benefits of breast reconstruction after mastectomy

Breast amputation creates a physical asymmetry, but the effect is also psychological, due to the symbolism attributed to breasts. Restoring breast relief has been shown to bring significant improvement both physically and psychologically. Self-image and the way the patient perceives her femininity improve dramatically after breast reconstruction.

Mastectomy is the surgical ablation of the breast performed to treat a malignant tumour. When the oncologist does not recommend postoperative radiotherapy, mastectomy can be followed by breast reconstruction in the same surgical session. Secondary reconstruction is considered when the ablative operation must be followed by complementary treatments.

Breast reconstruction techniques are varied but aim to restore the shape and volume of the lost breast, restore the nipple-areola complex, and, where appropriate, a symmetrisation intervention of the healthy breast. Breast reconstruction after mastectomy for oncological conditions is covered by health insurance.

Frequently asked questions

Breast reconstruction is not a mandatory act after breast cancer, but it is a recognised right. This intervention allows the attenuation or even erasure of physical marks left by the disease and allows affected women to reclaim their body and femininity.
Breast reconstruction may require one, two, sometimes even three interventions. The first aims to restore volume, the second aims to symmetrise the two breasts and can often be done together with the third, which targets restoration of the nipple-areola complex.
There are two distinct protocols, depending on the nature of the condition, the necessary oncological treatment and the patient's wishes. The decision is made by the multidisciplinary team in collaboration and in line with the patient's wishes.
Hospitalisation after breast reconstruction varies between 4-8 days, depending on the type of intervention. Physical effort must be reduced for at least two months.
The definitive appearance of a scar is completely unpredictable, and scarring is an individual process. Wound closure occurs in 2-3 months, but the final scar appearance can be analysed at 12 months. Whatever type of reconstruction is chosen, the medical team and family will be essential in supporting the patient.
