Otoplasty

Otoplasty – prominent ear surgery

The purpose of this procedure is to correct the appearance of the auricle, which can affect the balance of the face, when the angle between the auricle and the skull is too wide or the folds on the ear surface have not formed.

The operation can be performed as day surgery, under light anaesthesia. The surgical technique targets:

  • reduction of the angle formed by the auricle and skull;
  • reduction of the amount of auricular cartilage when it is in excess and projects the auricle forward;
  • re-definition of the folds of the auricular cartilage.

The results of otoplasty are permanent; correction of the cartilage will restore symmetry and bring the auricle closer to the skull, allowing hair to be worn in any style. Unilateral or bilateral otoplasty can be performed at any age after 7 years.

Before the intervention

Before the intervention the patient will be seen on at least two distinct occasions for a thorough examination of the auricles and for drawing up a detailed plan with the necessary changes. Medical photographs will be taken. The type of anaesthesia will be decided jointly by the surgeon, anaesthetist and patient. In children all interventions are performed under general anaesthesia.

After the intervention

Immediately postoperatively physical effort is prohibited, and the patient will feel moderate discomfort or slight pain, associated with a slight sensation of pressure. Oedema and bruising are frequent after otoplasty. Initially the dressing is bulky and must be kept for about 5 days.

The healing process takes one to two months, but the final result can be evaluated at about one year after the intervention. Most often, otoplasty results in well-positioned, symmetrical and well-oriented ears of normal shape, size and appearance.

Frequently asked questions

Otoplasty can be performed at any age after 7 years, when the size of the ears is approximately equal to the size of adult ears. If the ears are extremely prominent and the asymmetry is marked, intervention before entering community is recommended. The intervention lasts one to two hours under general anaesthesia.
Pain is a common phenomenon after surgery, but responds to common analgesics. Pain that does not subside after administration of analgesics may be a sign of the appearance of complications and requires medical attention.
For two and a half weeks it is necessary to wear an elastic band over the ears. Sports activities are not recommended for 4–6 weeks, including swimming. The patient will be monitored as an outpatient for one year postoperatively.
The scar is very well camouflaged in the groove between the ear and the skull. At first it has a pinkish colour, and in time it fades and becomes whitish. To obtain optimal results it is important to avoid sun exposure.
