Mastopexy

Mastopexy or breast lift

In certain persons, after pregnancy/breastfeeding or after significant weight loss, the position of the breasts in relation to the thorax may change. The nipple may appear below the inframammary groove, and the breast may appear empty.

In this situation, the role of the plastic surgeon is essential in repositioning and remodelling the breasts. The intervention aims to correct ptosis and is called mammoplasty or breast lift, being a purely aesthetic intervention. After mammaplasty we expect to obtain a moderately voluminous breast, well positioned in relation to thoracic landmarks.

The surgeon will modify the volume of the mammary gland and the skin envelope using a wide range of surgical techniques. Most often, the scar will have the shape of an inverted T, consisting of three parts: a circular part around the areola, a vertical one connecting the areola to the inframammary groove, and a third along the inframammary groove.

When ptosis is associated with volume loss, both problems can be solved in a single session, in an intervention called augmentation-mastopexy, with a higher degree of difficulty, but after which the patient has a breast with a pleasant shape and adequate volume.

Breast lift can be performed at any age after physiological growth ceases and does not affect the ability to procreate, but may affect the ability to breastfeed. When pregnancy is planned, it should be considered at least 6 months after the intervention.

Frequently asked questions

The position of the breast relative to the thorax depends mainly on two factors: breast volume or weight and tissue quality, but is influenced by other secondary factors: age, hormonal changes, weight variations — it can appear as early as adolescence.
The surgeon will perform a complete clinical examination and will request a series of investigations. A second consultation is necessary to discuss the results and verify that the patient's wishes have been well understood.
The causes of ptosis are multifactorial. Congenital ptosis may be present from the beginning of mammary gland development. Mammary hypertrophy leads to a weight that cannot be supported by the skin envelope. Pregnancy is another situation where glandular volume increases and puts pressure on skin tissue.
The intervention is called augmentation-mastopexy and can use fat transfer or implants. In addition to repositioning, this procedure improves breast contour and nipple projection, but the intervention has a higher degree of difficulty.
Treatment of breast ptosis is performed under general anaesthesia followed by a hospitalisation of about 2-3 days. The intervention itself lasts 2-3 hours and involves a complete remodelling of the breast.
After mastopexy the patient must avoid physical effort. The first dressing change takes place 2-6 days postoperatively. The compressive bra must be worn day and night for 4-6 weeks. It takes 2-3 months for wound healing, and the final shape is appreciable after about two months.
