Mammary hypertrophy is the medical term describing an excessively large mammary gland, taking the shape of an oversized cone, with a downward-oriented nipple-areola complex. It is usually associated with a degree of ptosis and possibly asymmetry.

Breast reduction is the procedure indicated when increased breast volume causes back pain and discomfort in daily activities. Both the aesthetic and psychological problems can be improved with this intervention, and the patient's satisfaction is immediate.

Benefits of breast reduction

Breast reduction will eliminate the surplus of glandular volume, but will also reposition the breasts in the same operation, correcting existing asymmetries where possible. Repositioning of the nipple-areola complex makes a significant contribution to the final aesthetic appearance.

Breast reduction involves the presence of scars, with the periareolar scar always present, along with a horizontal and a vertical scar most often. This pattern is known as the inverted T scar. Scars are permanent and cannot be erased, and their appearance varies from patient to patient.

Questions fréquentes

After breast reduction, the lower pole of the breast may temporarily change its sensitivity, but this tends to gradually recover. The same applies to the areola and nipple, whose sensitivity gradually returns.
The final appearance of scars cannot be assessed earlier than one year. Scars are placed so they are easily covered by bras. They fade over time, sometimes imperceptible, other times more persistent.
The patient will need to avoid physical and domestic effort for two to three weeks. If the profession involves sedentary activity, 15 days is a sufficient rest interval. Sports are not recommended for at least two months postoperatively.
Pregnancy is safe and possible after breast reduction, but breastfeeding is not a certainty. Some women retain their ability to breastfeed, but some do not, and the patient must know this before making the final decision.
The intervention is indicated when physical or psychological suffering becomes unbearable, affecting intimate, social or professional life. The minimum age at which the intervention has been performed is 15 years, but it is advisable to wait until growth ceases.
Post-procedural hospitalisation can last between two and five days. The intervention itself can extend over two to three hours. Bra use is recommended for six weeks, day and night. The final result will be appreciated by the patient approximately one year after the intervention.
