Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia represents an abnormal development of the mammary gland and/or adipose tissue at the breast level in men. The consequence is an increase in breast volume, bilaterally, with a negative impact on the self-image of the man in question.

After puberty or after weight loss, some men find themselves in a situation where breast volume is excessive. When the excessive volume is due to glandular growth, the cause is usually a hormonal imbalance. Sometimes it may only be a fat accumulation around the nipple and is called adipomastia. Before any surgical correction, an endocrinological examination, an ultrasound or mammography is necessary, if the condition is unilateral.

The benefits of treating gynecomastia consist of obtaining a more masculine body contour by eliminating unwanted excess. Apart from the aesthetic benefit, an equally important psychological benefit exists — patients who correct gynecomastia feel more confident in participating in sports or recreational activities that involve body exposure.

Frequently asked questions

Treatment of gynecomastia consists of removing excess volume through a periareolar incision or liposuction. Sometimes, the two procedures can be combined.
Gynecomastia can be treated as day surgery. The intervention must be preceded by an endocrinological examination and lasts one to two hours, under general anaesthesia. Wearing a compressive vest for four to six weeks is necessary.
Nipple sensitivity is influenced by the type of procedure used. If liposuction predominates, the impact on sensitivity is lower, but when a larger amount of skin or tissue needs to be removed, the change in sensitivity is more significant and usually permanent.
