Abdominoplasty
After pregnancy or multiple pregnancies, or after weight loss, the skin at the abdomen level may take on the appearance of an inelegantly hanging apron. An abdominoplasty is the intervention that can remove this excess, redrafting the remaining skin, repositioning the navel and repairing the abdominal wall where needed.
Most often, abdominoplasty treats excess skin at the abdomen level, but it can be associated with liposuction and can extend around the waist when necessary.
The intervention is performed under general anaesthesia and lasts 3-4 hours. Abdominoplasty involves the excision of a skin area and the underlying tissues, down to the abdominal wall. A long scar results, positioned so that it can be easily hidden by a bikini. Hospitalisation lasts 3-4 days.
Mini-abdominoplasty is indicated when there is minimal skin excess, with the formation of suprapubic folds, usually after a caesarean section. This intervention can be performed as day surgery, under local anaesthesia and sedation.
Benefits of abdominoplasty
- This intervention removes sagging and excess or damaged, stretch-marked skin from the abdomen. The normal appearance of the abdomen is regained after conservation and repositioning of the navel. The intervention results in a long transverse scar, usually perfectly hidden by underwear.
- Abdominoplasty can be performed in the same surgical session as liposuction; their combination can create a more balanced contour of the anterior part of the body.
- Umbilical hernia and rectus abdominis diastasis can and should be resolved in the same session.
